I've been reminded just how time constrained shooting these projects can be. And on that note... all blog entries from this point forward will probably be posted the day following the events for each blog. So, what that means is... be patient, I'll get the photos posted as I can, but some days just run too long.
Day One - Door Knock Day: This was definitely a "punch in the nose" reminder of how much of a time constraint the days events can put on one person. The day started early (4:30am) for an early morning drive from Columbia to Charlotte to meet up with the production company (Lock & Key Productions) at the staging location in Downtown Charlotte. There, I was also reminded just how good they treat the folks involved with these project. The catering is wonderful. No, really... I mean it, they server really good food.
Once everyone was ready to go, the producer called the cast and crew into a huddle, just as they do before every project, and told the cast the story behind the family, and reminded them of why they do what they do. during this pre-build meeting, the producer, the director, Ty Pennington, and Rick Marlini (the builder) all spoke and talked about the family and what this new home would do for, not only the family, but also the community that they serve with the daycare they run from their home.
Rick Marlini, the builder on this project, also spoke about how he moved his business from Detroit after the housing market there collapsed, and how the gracious southern community in Charlotte has welcomed him and his business. If you are a fan of the show you will remember Rick as the builder (in Detroit) who built an Extreme Makeover Home Edition house in the record time of 52 hours. While it was truly an impressive accomplishment, building a house that is supposed to be filmed on a schedule in such a short period of time put quite a strain on the film crew. Rick promised not to build this one so fast and that he would stick to the schedule.

This is "GT". He's the director for this episode of Extreme Makeover Home EditionTM

As hard as it is to believe, the family really doesn't know that they have been selected to receive the makeover. All they know is that they are in the running and that if it is going to happen, it will happen on a certain date by a certain hour (that's why they are always home and dressed).
Good Morning King Family... The design crew calls the family out which is when they really do find out their lives are going to change for the better in an unbelievable way.

The local TV station had their camera crews on the scene...
The family got to meet the builders for the first time. Rick promised to build them a wonderful home with the help of literally 1000s of volunteers from right here in their community.

This is the family's old house. By Wednesday afternoon this one will be gone and construction of the new house will have begun. By next Monday their new home will be finished and the family will get to come home to their new life.
By the end of the day, the family is packed and put in the limo to go on their vacation (Porto Rico), and then for the crew to get the house ready for DEMOLITION...!!!
